Fernando Alonso is a living legend of Formula 1, and this season, the new Aston Martin driver is the driver to watch. The Spaniard has competed in 217 races, winning 32 of them. He is also the record point holder in Formula One history, with 1,606.
The preseason makes clear the potential.
The preseason tests have revealed great potential for Alonso and the AMR23.
The conclusion reached by Aston Martin’s rivals after the results of the tests in Bahrain is that Fernando Alonso is a serious threat.
What caught the most attention was the race simulation that Fernando Alonso did at the end of the last day, with a combination of medium/hard/medium tires that allowed him to go faster and faster.
At the moment, everything is going well; for Aston Martin, the only problem is Lance Stroll, who could not participate in the tests, which limits the amount of data the team could collect.
“We had our plans for what we wanted to do over the three days,” team manager Mike Krack said at the end of the preseason. “We had a bit of a problem causing the first red flag in testing, and everybody looked at each other like, ‘Oh, this is not a good start.
“I think we’ve done a little over 350 laps in the three days, which is pretty good. So from that point of view, we’re happy that we were able to do everything we wanted to do.
“You always want to do much more than you can do in three days. You have a huge list of needs, and requests from all kinds of departments, and you have to set priorities. The to-do list doesn’t get shorter. Every time you’ve done something, another topic arises”.
“So you can never say you’re done. You always have questions to answer. But this is also the great thing about F1: you always have to explore other directions, new ideas, and things like that.”
The bosses of other teams, such as Red Bull and Mercedes Benz, have acknowledged how impressed they are by Aston Martin’s performance in testing. But Krack is taking it in stride and maintaining conservative expectations. At the end of the day, Alonso was ninth overall.
“The race simulation was not bad,” he acknowledged. “But you must also not forget that the track conditions were really good. You had a lot of rubber because other teams were using new tires many times, also on soft tires.
“And that helps when doing a race simulation. So again, it’s good to have good long runs, but you still have to put them in the right context, and let’s not start dreaming.”
“With those dynamics that you can sometimes have, like when someone says something is very good,” Krack said. “And then someone says it’s good, and someone else says it’s very good… It’s like when the word gets out among the kids at school. So I think we have to keep our feet on the ground.”
“Our expectations are always high, and at this time of the year, everyone wants to do well and convince others. We are realistic. We have clear objectives, which is to improve compared to where we were last year and then we’ll see.”
Is Fernando Alonso a potential candidate for the F1 title?
Much remains to be seen to determine how well Alonso will do in the 2023 season; everything indicates that he has a fast and well-designed car.
The AMR23 has been developed by technical director Dan Fallows (ex-Red Bull) and his newly hired colleagues, including former Mercedes aerodynamicist Eric Blandin.
Alonso has the ability and can be a great candidate to challenge Max Verstappen at the top.
