Carlos Alcaraz and Daniil Medvedev favorites in Indian Wells Tournament

Indian Wells Tournament

The Indian Wells tournament is preparing for the quarterfinal round where Carlos Alcaraz and Daniil Medvedev are the favorites.

Carlos Alcaraz

Carlos Alcaraz reached the quarterfinals of Indian Wells tournament after beating Jack Draper. The Briton withdrew due to injury when he was 6-2 and 2-0 down. “I would say that I returned well; I hit big shots. I finished the match confidently to go to the next round with more confidence,” Alcaraz analyzed at a press conference.

This is the 25th victory in a Masters 1,000 for Alcaraz, and only two tennis players achieved more victories before turning 20 in a tournament of this category: Rafa Nadal, 53, and Andrei Medvedev, 27.

Alcaraz stated that he had recovered his confidence after his injury, “In the Argentina Open, I did not feel like a favorite. When I started playing my first matches, I began to regain confidence, my style, and my level, it was me again. Right now, I feel that I can win, that I’m there and I’m one of the favourites.

“The right down the line is a shot that helps me understand where I am. When I land that shot very well, I say to myself, okay, I know I’m playing at a high level at that moment.”

Alcaraz is only three victories away from being No. 1 in the world again, and although he has dominated the tournament so far, the most complicated part is coming with increasingly challenging rivals.

Daniil Medvedev

Daniil Medvedev reached the quarterfinals after an impressive comeback from Zverev.

But the player has stood out more because of his attitude and constant complaints about the conditions of the courts.

“This court is a disgrace for tennis (…). And they call it a hard court? What a shame to call this horrible court a hard court,” he said after losing the first set.

Later in the game, he told the referee that he would walk to the bathroom as slow as the court itself and assured that he did not care if he was penalized. “If they allow us to play on such a court, I can afford to do whatever I want.”

One of the chair umpires spoke to the Russian tennis player and told him, “Daniil, this is a fast court,” to which the Russian tennis player replied: “No, this is not a fast court. I know what a fast court is. I’m a specialist.”

Although he is playing with an injured ankle after a fall, Medvedev aims to win the title in Indian Wells tournament and add to his winning streak, where he has consecutively won tournaments in Rotterdam, Doha, and Dubai.

If the Russian is posied as one of the strongest tennis players this season, but there is something that scares him, and that is facing Rafa Nadal at Roland Garros.” I am afraid of playing against him on clay, although we will have to try.

“I’ve never played him on that surface. It’s probably the biggest challenge for a tennis player, to beat Nadal on clay. I think he’s lost 10 matches or less, I’m not sure.”
